 AMTIR 2

Amtir 2, an arsenic selenium glass,  was developed at Amorphous Materials in 1980 while working with NVL at Ft. Belvoir.  A shortage of germanium had developed which resulted in a dramatic increase in the price of germanium and the cost of producing Amtir 1. Amtir 2 at that time was difficult to fabricate into lens blanks. AMI has not strongly recommended its use in the past for that reason. Now, we have entered a period of germanium price instability again. Recent developments in fabrication techniques at AMI have demonstrated we can now fabricate Amtir 2 blanks as well as our other glasses. The production process of the glass is now well established and the refractive index measured again this year. The glass has a low DN/DT in both the 3-5 mm and the 8-12 mm bands. Optical Homogeneity is better than that of Amtir 1.  We now strongly recommend its use in new infrared systems.
